M S DHONI : AWARDS

 

MS Dhoni received country's third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, from President Ram Nath Kovind. The former Indian captain, who holds the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel, wore his official uniform of the Territorial Army for the ceremony.

Exactly seven years after lighting up the Mumbai skyline with an unforgettable six, Mahendra Singh Dhoni again became the cynosure of all eyes as the honorary Lieutenant Colonel received the Padma Bhushan Award, dressed in an army uniform.

It was a happy coincidence for Dhoni as he was conferred with the prestigious civilian honour on the seventh anniversary of their famous World Cup triumph.



The Indian Territorial Army had conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel to Dhoni on November 1, 2011, months after the country lifted its second World Cup under his leadership.

The 39-year-old Dhoni is the second Indian cricketer after Kapil Dev to receive this honour.


Dhoni has been the recipient of many awards, including the ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2008 and 2009 (the first player to win the award twice), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2007 and the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour in 2009.

  “ Leaders are born not made ”.” Leaders are made not born ”. Probably both these phrases contradict each other yet both are true. To my mind MS Dhoni has redefind leadership as an act where a person is more concious about team effort as well as leading the team well. Dhoni is someone who backs other players when they are not performing too well. Unlike dictators where only job of leader is to give orders,Dhoni leads from the front.He is someone who will take all blame for poor performance of team and no credit for achievement.He believes that cricket is not just a game but an emotion and it is a great leveller as it teaches you how to remain humble.In a nutshell Dhoni is a great leader and a benign human being too.  In 1998, M.S.Dhoni, who had been playing only in school and club level cricket till then, was selected to play for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team. He impressed Deval Sahay, an ex-Bihar Cricket Association Vice-President,with his determination and hard-hitting skills, which opened up opportunities for him to play in First Class cricket. During the 1998-99 season, he failed to make it to the East Zone U-19 squad or Rest of India squad, but he was selected for the East Zone U-19 squad for the CK Nayudu trophy in the next season. Unfortunately, he could not perform well and his team finished last in the tournament.
